Educational Objectives: This major aim to cultivate advanced specialized talents who are in line with the needs of biotechnology industry development. The graduates are expected to have a comprehensive development in morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics and labor, possess a strong foundation in natural sciences, a broad academic perspective, and the potential for further advanced studies and development. They will systematically master the basic knowledge, fundamental theories and basic experimental skills of biotechnological science and technology. Graduates are expected to be capable of engaging in applied research, technological development and production management related to biotechnology in industries, such as agriculture, forestry, medicine, and food.

Main Courses: Students in this major primarily study fundamental knowledge and theories of biology, receive training in scientific thinking and basic skills in basic and applied research in biotechnology. Key courses include biochemistry, microbiology, genetics, molecular biology, cell biology, cell engineering, genetic engineering, fermentation engineering, medicinal plant cultivation and so on.

Faculty Strength: The major is supported by 55 full-time teachers, including 8 professors, one provincially-appointed distinguished professor and 3 university-appointed distinguished professors, of which 39 teachers have doctorate.

Achievements in major Development: The major has established a Biology Teaching Demonstration Center at the provincial level and a master's program in biology. It is supported by the Henan Modern Biological Breeding Collaborative Innovation Center and has established key research laboratories, such as Plant Genetic Engineering Technology and Application Laboratory in Xinxiang city, the Crop Root Biology and Green Efficient Production Key Laboratory in Xinxiang city and a School-level Molecular Biology Laboratory. The major offers provincial-level quality courses and first-class courses such as Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering, Plant Physiology and Biochemistry. Bilingual courses were provided, such as genetic engineering, Molecular Biology and genomics. The major has five teaching and research offices, including the Plant Physiology and Biochemistry Teaching and Research Office, the Molecular Biology Teaching and Research Office, the Biotechnology Teaching and Research Office, the Medicinal Plant Chemistry Teaching and Research Office and the Botany Teaching and Research Office. It has also established over 20 off-campus internship bases.

Employment Prospects: Graduates are expected to engage in scientific research and technological development in biological sciences in enterprises, research institutes, administrative institutions, universities and other related organizations.

Exemplary Outstanding Graduates:

1. Wang Chao, graduated from our Biotechnology major in 2008, obtained a master's degree from Shenzhen University in 2011, and a Ph.D. from the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2015. Since September 2015, he has been a postdoctoral fellow and assistant researcher at the Shenzhen Center for Disease Prevention and Control.

2. Niu Zhiyuan, graduated from our Biotechnology major in 2011, obtained a master's degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Nanjing University in 2013 and qualified for direct admission to a doctoral program in Pharmacy in 2016, earning a Ph.D. degree.
